Hello,
My husband and I have three children, ages 6, 4 and 17 months. Our oldest were adopted from Haiti at almost 5 and 16 months (came home at different times, yet are bio siblings). They are very happy and loving and we're over the huge adjustment period that occurred with our oldest coming home, but he has trouble in school and that is why I'm looking for extra support. He's very bright and doing great academically, but he has trouble listening and being quiet. I don't feel l get enough positive advice from his teacher and we're struggling with how to deal with all of the notes and calls from school. He is starting to feel like a "bad" kid and it breaks my heart. I'm trying to be an advocate for him, but don't know exactly what I should do with the school issues. He lived in extreme poverty with loving birth parents from birth to 3 and then in an orphanage for two years before coming to us almost two years ago. Plus I often wonder if lead poisoning as well as institutionalization could be a part of his behavioral problems. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome Taryn,

We're glad that you're here. School issues can be very frustrating when you are working so hard to create a loving environment of healing at home. I'm sure Ryan will have something to suggest for you in the education forum. Remember that the more fear (and stress) you take into the situation at school, the more stress there will be in the relationship with your son and his teacher. Stop. Breathe. The solutions are within you.

Thanks for joining us here. I hope you find some information and support that will help you on your journey.

Hi Rebecca, Thank you for writing. I did post a question for Ryan and found his advice helpful. Hopefully we'll make some progress with his school issues this year!
Take care,
