Hi! I am writing in concern with an incident that happened with my son 12 years old going to a time out room and the classroom aide got kicked because my son was stressed and they could Not recognize that and had called the police. This is an emotional support school. It is written in his IEP to call mother when stressed.
Today we had to go to our second intake at the probation office and I mentioned about the timeout room being an isolated place. plus I feel it is a place of threat and fear. I wanted to mention about time in, but didn't. I am wondering if there is any other suggestions school can do for these situations of having to go to a time out room? Even Probation is open to ideas if I can come up with any. I feel in my heart that I need to share the Beyond consequences book with them. (probation) I have shared it with the school and most are open to it. How could they us time in (in the school setting) any suggestions.
Thanks,
VirLinda

The IEP is a legally binding document created by your child's education team with your input. It sounds like the section about calling mom when stressed may be too vague. You may wish to ask that the IEP be revised to include more specific behaviors and corresponding interventions.

Work to get exactly what behaviors your son exhibits when he is becoming more and more stressed and exactly want you want to happen written into the IEP. That way, you, your child, and your child's teacher will all be on the same page.

I tried send a reply on saturday and don't know what happened to it.
We did have an IEP meeting and the school social worker said the
same thing as you said Ryan. so they defined stress.
It is under home communication when (name) is in time out
and is unable to de-escalate displayed by the inability to respond
to specific requests by staff after 15 minutes.
Then I had them do verbal communication to (name) by staff
when physical assist is neccessary.
We had juvenille court on monday and we were able to do an informal,
where 3-6 months of probation in the school setting. hands off policy.
I feel like the big watch dog is going into the school, now, the probation
guy called the principal and said something to her about this aide needing
moved from my son. The school needs to help and not harm.
I feel pretty good about our juvenille system in our county.
Our son is ok with what had happened. He is so happy about going
to school and learning. He has homework 2-3 nights a week and comes
home and gets his special pencil to work on it and it gets done and gives
it to me to check.
If there is anymore suggestion I am open to them.
Thanks, Peace,
VirLinda
